Roots Of Practice
Roots of Practice - yoga philosophy Summer school
For students whose curiosity has been growing quietly in class, and who are ready to follow it further. Three standalone sessions exploring the origins, ethics and energy of yoga — and, more than anything, how each teaching actually relates to the life you're living now.
Three 90-minute sessions. Small group, in-person, running across August.
 Why join?
This is a beginning. It's a first introduction to the ideas underneath the practice you already know.
You'll come away with:
- The origins and foundations of yoga, explained simply
- A clearer sense of the terms you've heard in class, and a few new ones worth having
- An overview of the chakras, and why they still matter today
- A solid grounding you can build on, whether that's in your own practice or a future course
Each session asks a direct question of what you learn: what does this actually mean for how I move through my life, on the mat and off it? The aim is to give you a grounded understanding in yoga philosophy so that you recognise these ideas in your own practice, and enough curiosity to want to go further. If you do want to go further, this is designed to lead somewhere. The chakra overview in Part Three is a taster for a much deeper chakra course starting in the autumn. This is where that ground gets laid.
The three sessions
Each session stands alone. You are welcome to come to one or come to all three.
Part One: The Essence of Yoga
The origins, history and development of yoga into its modern form. Making sense of common yogic terms you'll have heard in class. An introduction to the foundational framework of the eight limbs of yoga, and a conversation about which of the eight already show up in your life, and which feel furthest away.
Part Two: Living Your Yoga
What actually makes a lifestyle "yogic"? You will discover yoga's ethical principles of the yamas and niyamas and how we can use these guidelines in how how we meet others and how we care for ourselves. We'll talk through what these principles ask of us in ordinary, modern situations, and how they might sit more comfortably in your daily life.
Part Three: The Energy of Yoga
An overview of the chakras, the body's energy centres, and why the system still holds relevance today. We'll explore what each centre represents in practical terms, and discuss how an awareness of your own energy might change how you move through a normal week.
