Befriend your nervous system

A small-group course for women around menopause who want to feel steadier when anxiety shows up and feel more like themselves again. Four Saturday mornings in Marple, starting 14th November.

You used to feel capable, in control and comfortable in your own skin. Then perimenopause came along and shook this foundation. Anxiety turns up in situations you would once have managed easily, like driving at night or sitting in work meetings. This change can leave you feeling like a stranger to yourself.

You want to know what you can do to feel more like you again. This course is where we start.

What does it mean to befriend your nervous system?

Befriending your nervous system means listening to your body wisdom as a caring friend would. Listening instead of arguing. Staying present with it during the tough days and the good ones.

It means recognising that the nervous system is a dynamic body system. It is not meant to be static as it moves between activating and settling. When you stop seeing your nervous system as a problem to be solved, something changes. You accept that it is a part of you. You can notice it without being swept along by it.

This course is for you if you:

  • Feel more at ease in a small, friendly group

  • Want to try different practices for the breath, body, and mind to find out which ones work for you

  • Like to understand what is happening in your body and why

  • Would value talking through real-life situations with other women

  • Want a solid, sustainable approach, rather than a quick fix

  • Are willing to practise at home between sessions

What's included?

Each session will weave together these four strands:

Understand it. Informed by current research, I will explain what is happening in your body, giving you the language to describe what you’re experiencing. Knowing it's your physiology rather than a personal failure can help to reduce stress around your reactions.

Experience it. This course is designed to bring your body and mind into a place of connection and safety through yoga, breathwork, yoga nidra, self-massage and meditation. You'll discover which practices resonate with you, and which approaches are most useful to you in different situations.

Use it every day (or at least most days). A daily practice is where the work takes root, but creating a lasting new habit can be challenging. I will support you in this. You will have access to an online resource bank of techniques covered on the course as well as a private WhatsApp group to ask questions. The four weekly sessions will create a foundation, and then over Christmas you get to test your new skills in real life before our final session in January. You'll leave with a real-time toolkit for everyday situations that you feel confident to use.

Shift the thinking. Have you ever thought "Why am I struggling when I used to be able to cope?" Using mindfulness and coaching, you can learn to notice your thoughts as they happen, ask whether they're true, and look at what's stopping you from taking the action that would help. We'll also look at where you say yes when you mean no, and how to protect your energy without guilt. This is coaching, not therapy. It's practical, and it's about what you do next.

Why me?

I have been a yoga teacher for 17 years and a yoga therapist for the last ten. I have a passion for how different yoga techniques can support women at different life stages. This course has grown out of my own experience of perimenopause. An extended period of stress coincided with my shifting hormones, and I found myself anxious in situations I had always previously managed with ease. I drew on everything I knew as a yoga therapist to support myself. Everything I teach you, I have used myself.

An invitation

You’re not broken. Your nervous system is doing what it was designed to do, which is respond to what is happening in your life and body. During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal changes can make that response stronger. It isn’t something to fear, and you don’t have to work it out alone. With understanding, practice and a little support, you can learn to work with it.

If that sounds like what you need, I’d love you to join me.
